My, my, my! Such a lot of guns around town and so few brains!

We all recognize that there isn't much that a country like Iran can do to keep from getting attacked by the Bush administration. Disarm as Iraq did and they hit you. Accelerate development of nuclear weapons and they hit. Actual posses ion of significant mounts of the weapons themselves seems to be the only true deterrent (see North Korea.)

But do they really have to poke Bush with a stick?

Iranian Navy Seizes 15 British Sailors

Blackanthem Military News, WASHINGTON, D.C. – The British government is demanding the immediate and safe release of 15 sailors whose boats were surrounded by Iranian navy vessels and escorted into Iranian territorial waters in the Persian Gulf this morning.

Ladybug is more with you than me on this one.

In my view, the US has basically been kidnapping Iranians in Iraq for the last few months and Iran might want a few of them back. This makes a bargaining chip. Also, the Iranian seizure occurred in disputed waters (though the newspapers claim it is Iraqi waters), so perhaps it was the British exercising bad judgment.

Finally, how do we know this (cough, Gulf of Tonkin, cough, Weapons of Mass Destruction, cough) even occurred? Well, the Iranians went ahead and stuck them on TV. But the point remains that I wouldn't believe a Western government looking for a pretext that a pretext actually occurred.

Besides, the last time Iran took hostages, the Republicans covertly sold them weapons to win an election. Maybe they have some cheeky deal like that worked out this time too. It wouldn't surprise me.

Happens to a lot of these guys that go up against the World Corporatists. They often have little understanding of the appropriate rhetoric for the world stage.

It is, however, the Bushies, the Likud Party, and AIPAC that are wilding the poking sticks.

Want to paint your enemy in the worst possible light? Home in on their hot buttons, push, push, push. Beef up your presence in disputed geographical areas and religious flash points. When they explode, stand back and point out their intemperate response to the world.

It's worked for decades

I dunno, it looks like they're pushing Blair w/a stick.....

I'm thinking Iran needs to keep up appearances for it's "axis-of-Evil" PR Campaign agains the West; and since the British commitment to our little "war" has been wavering as of late, they've now got 15 reasons to kick Iran's A$$ with us.*

Don,

The tit for tat stuff makes sense. I'd forgotten we'd been arresting Iranian nationals. Unfortunately Britain, at least in public, wants to extricate themselves from the ME.
