Now I tell a tale of the threshold people, so astounding that some of you may faint.

This story is awful--

A woman was locked for four days in a tiny holding cell in a northern Arkansas courthouse, forgotten by the authorities and left without food or water, the local Sheriff’s Department said Tuesday.

The woman, Adriana Torres-Flores, 38, a longtime illegal immigrant from Mexico, slept on the floor with only a shoe for a pillow, and with nothing to drink except her own urine, The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reported. There was no bathroom in the cell.

A bailiff had apparently forgotten that he placed Ms. Torres-Flores, a mother of three, in the cell last Thursday, and simply left her in the empty courthouse, in Fayetteville, over the weekend, said the chief deputy of the Washington County Sheriff’s Department, Jay Cantrell. A snowstorm meant that there were far fewer people than usual working at the courthouse on Friday.
I scanned the story a couple of times to see if the baliff was fired. There's no mention of any discplinary action of any other kind than an "investigation." That is flat-out ridiculous.

I realize that Ms. Torres-Flores is an illegal alien and that somehow that makes her a little less important that us regular citizens but is it too much to ask she be treated with the minimum amount of respect and dignity she might see in any other third-world nation?

I'm hoping that if she's deported back to Mexico she goes back with a wallet stuffed with cash from her lawsuit against these idiots. Shame on bailiff and the county for letting this happen.

Oh shit. I am her age and was just in Fayetteville two months ago. I'm glad I didn't get caught.

I agree with you, Dean. I hope she can quit having to work here in the U.S. to send money back to her family in Mexico and can just get the cash and go enjoy her family. I'm glad she didn't die.

I do not think this "bailiff" forgot this woman; I think he knew EXACTLY what he was doing, and so did everybody who decided to look the other way about this "unfortunate incident"...

It's the south, not the
"warm and hospitable" place tourism boards proclaim... it's incestuous, nasty and ugly.

F the south, if I never go back, it'll be too soon.

Holy freaking crap.

That is awful. And the story, you know from that liberal rag the NY Times, focuses on her undocumented status and her flea market activities. (Flea marketing is like a direct path to terrorism, but you knew that...)

And the bailiff? Shazaam! He dun ferget she wuz in dere!

I'm sure glad we're a nation that follows Christian principles. You know damn well that if Jesus was around, he wouldn't have just kept her locked up, but smacked her around a bit, too.

We are losing our humanity in this country. We are going down an evil raod when this sort of behavior is expected rather than reviled.

That happened to a guy in New York a few years ago.

I agree with Randal (and indirectly with Snab). I certainly remember the gospels talking a lot about ignoring and beating down poor people. Jesus was all about treading the downtrodden down a bit more.

Probably why I'm a sort-of Buddhist now.

freida-

I really hope she gets some dough out of this although her current attorney (probably public defender) sounds like a dweeb. His reponse to this was something along the lines of "shit happens."

ladybug-

Yep. At best I suspect he just didn't care.

Swinebread-

'nuff said.

franiam-

Ha! Don't forget blackmarket knitting. We know those types are always mobbed up.

randal-

I guess she can count her lucky stars it wasn't abu ghraib.

don-

Exactly. This story should've caused an uproar. In the America I grew up in it would have.

zaius-

I'd forgotten about that story. You can't expect a big city like New York to keep track of everything. Especially with all the ghosts wrecking the place.

Arkonbey-

Buddhists are more Christian than most Christians IMHO.
