Uhura has been cast...

As a 13 year-old boy watching Star Trek I can say unequivocally that the beautiful Nichelle Nichols was my first encounter with the truism that racism is really a supremely stupid concept to live one's life by. The idea that someone wouldn't want to do the space nasty with Uhura just because she happened to be black seemed about the stupidest thing I could ever concieve of.

Of course I was later exposed to the writings and speeches of Dr. King and came across a whole bunch of other reasons why racism sucks but Uhura being an uber-hotty will always rank right up there near the top of my personal reasons.

I was afraid you wouldn't be able to stand up for me.

It's hard to believe but the reporting surround Bush's "surge" strategy by the media has been even more horrible than usual.

"WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President George W. Bush plans to withdraw 5,700 troops from Iraq by December and has accepted recommendations on force numbers by the top U.S. commander and diplomat in Iraq, a senior administration official said on Thursday."

That thumping sound you hear is my head against my desk.

Oh, and the President isn't trying to sell his strategy to a "divided" public. As Atrios constantly points out the public universally hates Bush and hates his pet war. Once again the media and beltway elites somehow consider themselves one side of the equation.

In reality their opinion counts for shit. Perhaps when they're offered a last cigarette and a blindfold they'll finally get the picture.

On the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks and after some personal reflection here are a couple of lessons I take from the attacks in the wake of the last six years.

Osama Bin Laden is a strategic genius. He was forward-thinking enough to realize that it was the perfect time to attack the United States. Our boy-president had just come into office surrounding himself with fellow deep-thinkers who could easily be counted on to go off the deep end and overreact accordingly. With Bush in office Bin Laden was assured that the United States was weak. He couldn't have been more correct in that assumption.

We will always be at war. One thing that leaps out and depresses the hell out of me is that there's a significant enough portion of powerful people who are so vastly intellectually immature that they simply can't define themselves outside of their violent opposition to some other ideology on the world stage, even if that ideology is in reality impotent. How else could one explain the almost effortless Neocon segue from "Oh my God the Ruskies are going to get us!" to "Oh my God the Islamofascists are going to get us!"

If pisses me off that these people continue to set an agenda in terms of resources and focus towards conflict when the vast majority of the world's population simply wants to go along to get along.

There is no longer an objective reality. Demonstrated most recently by the Petraeus testimony yesterday. All of those things that humans survive on a micro scale; the ability to learn from one's mistakes, objective reasoning, etc. are also a necessity on the macro scale that the entire society may survive. These things are missing and we are all suffering for it. Not to mention it drives the most rational of us absolutely bonkers.

Politicians don't really love this country. Their collective inability to defend our constitution in the wake of the attacks breaks my heart. I had always assumed that, regardless of our political leaders use of their elective office for personal aggrandizement, they had at least originally decided to serve and run for office based on a deep sense of patriotism. When push came to shove they would remember that original reason for service and act accordingly.

I was wrong.

BALTIMORE (AP) - The Maryland Lottery on Tuesday validated a winning Mega Millions ticket purchased by an accountant who teaches the Wiccan religion.

Elwood ``Bunky'' Bartlett said he will take a lump sum cash payment. His quarter share of Friday's Mega Millions jackpot amounts to about $48.6 million, or $32.6 million after taxes. He took the cash option because he can invest the money better than anyone else, Bartlett said after a meeting with lottery officials at the agency's headquarters in Baltimore.

Bartlett, 40, of Dundalk, said his win will allow him to devote his time to teaching people about Wicca, a nature-based religion. He said he also wants to buy a big house with a pool, but he doesn't plan to stop eating at McDonald's or buying his clothes at Wal-Mart. "

So after he retires Bush plans on founding the Derek Zoolander Center For Children Who Can't Read Good And Wanna Learn To Do Other Stuff Good Too. The actual concept of "freedom" is way beyond his limited presidential intellect.
