We are not the members of a democracy, Father. We are the members of an order.

I've mentioned many times that I don't like pope Ratzinger.

As a fallen catholic I've sort of decided that in most cases it doesn't matter what the catholic church does as long as they stay out of the rest of the world's business. Live and let live.

But condoms and AIDS prevention in Africa are very much the world's business. The pope is once again asserting a morally indefensible position and shaming the entire catholic church in the process.

I know individual catholics have nothing to do with that man assuming the throne of St. Peter. There are many, many catholics who disagree with the pope who've decided to keep their heads down and focus instead on making their communities better. I admire those people.

Nevertheless; I will not set foot in a catholic church until there's a different, less morally compromised man leading the church.

and I've mentioned many times that Pope Ratzinger looks like the Preacher from Poltergiest 2.

The current Pope has no moral authority. His selection must have been entirely political. He sounds more like a southern Baptist (the white ones anyway).

I've ignored him several times now :D

From what I've gathered...he was indeed a political choice...for the Phyllis Schafley-like pre-Vatican II throwbacks (who's shrill bitching has been heard by the "powers that be") instead of the more progressive John Paul II types....but since the good ol' RCC won't be admitting women into power, allowing birth control or abortion, just giving up on the whole "gay" issue, or even supporting something as basic as Liberation Theology any time soon - I've moved on.

The only thing they've got going for them is they have no problem with evolution. On that one issue they're ahead of the fundies.

Your local chaplain here... You did say I was sort of the lefty-bloggy chaplain once!

I am in NO WAY defending B16 when I say this, but to expect much different from this man is folly.

And for those of your readers who do not know me, I am the "papist" in the room.

You know I respect your position, but you also know this. I will not be pushed out of my church and away from the table because of this man or any other. So I continue my agitation from within.

Everyone in the blogworld and media give the old man (or La Tedesca Vecchia as the Italians call him, the Old German Woman!) more credit than he deserves.

Many find him the picture of pure evil. I rather find him more woefully ignorant and out of touch... all of which potentially contributes to evil, true enough.

Which is again no defense of him.

There are far too many good Catholic people doing lots of good work. I too ignore writing about them, that must change.

I know. I've noticed you ignoring him.

I agree that they're much more progressive on evolution than most other churches but this recent thing is a real throwback to the middle ages.

I hope you didn't find this post in any way insulting. That really wasn't my intention. You ARE the lefty blog chaplain. :)

I am also speaking only for myself. I do not want to try and push any good catholics out of the church. The church needs people like you.

As I've mentioned I have quite a bit of pressure through my MIL to get back INTO the church. Sometimes it's tempting. I have very happy memories of my time as a faithful catholic. I also read your stuff on your blog and remember that it's the people not the leadership.

That's where this post was coming from.

Finally- I know you remember a time around Vatican 2 when the church was actually a force for good through social change all around the world. I see things like the pope's recent comments as the opposite of that.

I want more Romero and less Ratzinger.

Randal-

Ha!

You really moving from Italia to England? That's so cool.

(btw: isn't the vatican it's own country?)

I don't know what his problem is. As pope, he has to wear that silly condom his head anyway.

This is one of those topics I've just been too angry and dumbfounded to comment on. My sense is that the Catholic church is in the same awful position as the republican party: it's populated in large part by simple, sensible, good people. People with whom I may disagree in numerous particulars, but people I'd be happy to have as neighbors and friends. People I could trust. The leadership, however, is utterly disconnected from reality and completely caught up with their own power and "right," as they see it, to decree what everyone should believe and how they should behave. And the leadership, of course, is what gets the coverage. So people like me find it very easy to skim the headlines, shake our heads, and sorrowfully mutter, "those effing Catholics/republicans. They're all freaking crazy!"
