I'll take "The Penis Mightier" for 100, Trebek.

Or is the pen mightier?

I heard the rumor that Dave Chappelle was going to do a free show at midnight in Pioneer Square via Twitter. I briefly considered heading down there but I really haven't been home much as it is with work taking up most of my time.

Because of the sound issue (Dave brought a small, battery operated mike and amp) when close to 12,000 people showed up I'm glad I didn't. Odds are I wouldn't of caught a word he was saying.

That doesn't take away from the coolness of the event and Chappelle in general for trying to pull it off.

In a broader sense I really am rethinking my disdain for Twitter. Between the recent uprising in Iran and now this I do think there is potential to really move people to the streets. Can you imagine how Twitter would've changed the anti-war movement in the run up to the Iraq war?

It's almost like the fear that online social networking would detract from real world interaction is not only wrong, but wildly wrong. Twitter has the power to bring people together in the real world. That's pretty incredible.

  1. I was tweeting for a while; about six months. Then I realized, I didn't have much to say in 240 characters. so I don't do it quite so much.

I followed a guy whose blog I read a lot, but had to drop him because he tweeted too much.

I do facebook now. We'll see how long that lasts

It might bring them together, in the way that I am together with my coworkers, but are we really communicating?

I love me some computerization, and I don't expect people to busting out diatribes on Kant or anything, but have you HEARD the kids these days? I do every day. Yikes. ;-)

  3. I was watching an old West Wing episode yesterday, the one in which Toby tells the young activists protesting the WTO that they're idiots and have no idea how to organize a real protest, and that they advertise protest info online so the cops are always a step ahead of them.

Twitter could help so much with this. That is, of course, until the government starts monitoring Twitter too (if they haven't already).

  4. I love twitter. I get to follow the likes of Rachel Maddow, Anna Marie Cox, Claire McCaskill, Sarah Silverman, and so many more. Plus a lot of my favorite bloggers. It is an exacting form, as you have only 140 characters in which to say something. Since I tend to be long winded I think the discipline is good for me. Plus it's nice to know that most news people are very foul mouthed. I follow all the liberal White House Press. Try it, you'll like it. Facebook on the other hand is ick to me. I don't want old school chums to look me up. I didn't like them in school. Actually I had no chums. And facebook seems to me to be for kids, whereas twitter is definitely for grownups. And you get to select the people you want to follow. Just because someone is following your tweets doesn't mean you have to follow them. And if you follow someone's tweets and they become a bore, just unfollow them.

  5. Twitter is a big part of my business. Of course, part of my business is touting myself as a social media expert.

The way I've been using it (in the real world, not @rickyshambles which you should all follow) is to connect to local business owners and people all over the world who do what I do. The local connection keeps me up to date on networking opportunities which are occurring at an increasing frequency.

The online connection joins me to the IRL meetings, Twitter is an automatic ice breaker, and the smile and the handshake is where the real relationships (and contracts) are made.

People who tweet 50 times a day, are on a mission to have 50,000 followers, or pout because they aren't getting any business from Twitter don't get it.

  6. Go Dave! I am glad he came.

I don't think Twitter would have changed anything about the Iraq war because the decision was made and nobody was consulted. There were hundreds of thousands in the streets of every major city and it didn't matter. In Iran, if you speak out, you are jailed. In America, you just get ignored because the power structure cannot be dislodged.

  7. Hmmm, I don't know what to call myself.

I don't have a twitter account, but follow Neil Gaiman, Wil Wheaton and a few others religiously (daily, hourly!). I just bookmark'em and check'em whenever...

I don't do Facebook either (but look over Snabby's shoulder...)

Does that mean I'm a new media voyeur?

"I like to watch"....-name that movie & the actor who said the line for a joygasm!

  8. it seems to me there are layers to twitter just like anything else. it can be a toy or it can be a tool--sometimes both and that is really cool :~)

  9. Chapelle is trying new things. I don't think that can ever be bad. But don't quote me on that.

I shift around how I use the new social media, but there are definitely uses for all of them.

Can I answer ladybug? I know! I know!

My developer is trying to convince me to move to .net from PHP.

I have always disliked the idea because of the costs. But he's tryiong none the less. I've been
using WordPress on various websites for about a year and am concerned about switching to another platform.
I have heard good things about blogengine.net.
Is there a way I can transfer all my wordpress posts into
it? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hello this is kind of of off topic but I was wondering if blogs use
WYSIWYG editors or if you have to manually code with HTML.
I'm starting a blog soon but have no coding experience so I wanted to get advice from someone with experience. Any help would be enormously appreciated!

I was wondering if you ever considered changing the layout of your site?
Its very well written; I love what youve got to say.

But maybe you could a little more in the way of content so people
could connect with it better. Youve got
an awful lot of text for only having 1 or
2 images. Maybe you could space it out better?

Exploring stumbleupon.com I noticed your website book-marked as:
Blogger: The Dean's Office. I am assuming you bookmarked it yourself and wanted to ask if social book-marking gets you a good deal of traffic? I've been thinking about doing some bookmarking for a few of my sites but wasn't sure if it would produce any positive results. Thanks.
